An anthropized baseline
The experiment began by confronting a deeply ingrained societal paradigm. The original site was a conventional residential garden: a manicured lawn bordered by rigid Thuja hedges and isolated specimen trees. This starting point reflected the dominant, preconceived aesthetic of what a ‘clean’ natural space should look like: an environment that prioritized a sanitized visual order over biodiversity or ecological viability.
To challenge this nature-culture divide, our first design gesture was one of radical subtraction: we ceased traditional, intensive maintenance and began removing the overgrown, dominant species.
